Avoiding Burnout: A Plan for Online Faculty (5/2 - 5/11/12)
Are you always on the computer? Are you regularly revising your courses? Do you have a 24/7-access mentality? You could be headed towards burnout. As more institutions are offering ongoing degree programs online, burnout increasingly is a concern for faculty, administrators, and instructional designers. Compared to traditional faculty, online teachers tend to spend more time preparing, assessing and teaching their courses. This workshop explores the issue of academic management in online learning and ways to incorporate online teaching into normal academic life. In addition to learning skills to avoid burnout that derives from multiple sources, participants will be encouraged to share their own institutional practices as part of the conversation. This online workshop, hosted by The Sloan Consortium.

Dr. John D. Moore has deep experience in higher education. A Counselor/Educator, Moore is Professor of Health Sciences at American Public University and acts as a training consultant with a number of learning institutions and corporations. For nearly two decades, Moore has been involved with online learning as both learner and educator.
In addition to his teaching work, Dr. Moore is therapist and is CEO of 2nd Story Consultants, a Chicago Based Counseling and Training Firm.
Prior to Moore's work mental health & education, he worked in the corporate sector in marketing and management roles. Some of the organizations he has been affilliated with include the IBM, Verizon, American Airlines and the American Bar Association.
Graduating with honors, Dr. Moore received his PhD in Human Psychology from the School of Behavioral Science at Northcentral University. Additionally, he holds a MBA from the School of Business at Indiana Tech and a Certificate in Strategic Leadership from Cornell. Moore received several awards for online course instruction, including the "Excellence in Teaching & Learning" Medallion from the American Public University System.
He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, a Board Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor.
He holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, Illinois Counseling Association, National Career Counselor Association and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES). He is author of the popular book, Confusing Love with Obsession (Hazelden).
A native of Chicago, he lives on the city's North Side.

Where is the workshop?

Is there any cost for me (or my department) to participate?
These workshops are solely sponsored by the Distance Education Department at USI. There is no cost to you or your department for you to participate the workshops. However, seats are limited - it is on a first come first served basis and the full time faculty members have reservation priorities.

What kind of equipment do I need?
You will need to have access to a computer with High Speed Internet connection and a headset everyday during the workshop period. The Distance Learning Office will provide each faculty participant a headset.
The workshop usually runs two weeks long. Do I need to meet the class every day? How much time commitment is required to participate?
These workshops usually involve one hour live session for orientation andone hour live session for panel discussion. The rest of the learning activities will be conducted using asynchronous communication tools just like how faculty would teach an online class. Thus, no specific date/time is required for participation except the live sessions.
All the live sessions will be recorded, so participants who cannot join the live meetings can watch the recordings later. Specific learning objective/outcome is determined for each week. You will probably spend 3-5 hours per week to participate depending on the weekly tasks assigned. The workshop participants will follow the instructions to access provided learning materials while engaging online discussions with other learners. Since these workshops are not conducted in the traditional format (instructor centered), self-motivated learning collaboration will be encouraged and reinforced.
There will be lots discussions between participants throughout the workshop period. It is highly recommended that every faculty participant login to the course site once a day or at least 5 times a week, so you can follow (fully participate) the class discussion throughout the learning period.
